Signature principle
Two stances toward the same situation — the player treats it as something they author, the spectator as something happening to them. The difference is where responsibility sits, not how much control you have.
Two stances toward the same circumstances. The spectator watches what is happening and explains why it could not have been otherwise. The player steps in and treats the situation as something they are authoring — including the parts they did not cause. The distinction is not optimism versus realism, and it is not about how much authority you actually hold. It is about where you locate the cause of what happens next.
