Zones vs Layers

Physical location is not modeling intent — and both coexist.

A demystification: zones are physical/operational locations (Bronze/Silver/Gold, medallion); layers express modeling intent (harmonization, curation, marts). They are orthogonal, and conflating them is why medallion-vs-Data-Vault debates go in circles. Two named layers fall out: the Harmonization Layer (make sources technically and semantically compatible) and the Curation Layer (codify business rules, reference data and complex KPIs).
